Long Distance Moving

Long Distance MovingThe process for a long distance move is quite similar to that of a local move. (see our local move). It does however differ in three major areas.. The first area is in how the move is priced. The second relates to how delivery schedules are determined and finally the importance of proper destination services is key to a successful long distance move.

Getting an Estimate

As with local moves, you should plan ahead. An accurate estimate is key to budgeting for a long distance move. If you are getting multiple estimates, then make sure you compare them on an “apples to apples” basis, not just the bottom line. Because the cost of your move is dependent on the weight of your shipment and the distance you are moving, you should always have a moving consultant come to your home to view the contents. Be sure to show them storage areas like sheds or attics and prepare a list of any items stored in another location or arrange for a viewing. Once the weight is established, the consultant will prepare pricing using Atlas Van Lines, published households goods tariff. The best way to reduce your moving cost is to discard unnecessary items.

Paying for the Move

Again payment options are cash, certified cheque, money order or VISA, Mastercard or Amex.
Your van operator will go to a government weigh scale to weigh his truck before loading your shipment. Once the shipment is on the van, he will return to the same scale for another weighing. The difference between these two weights is what your charges will be based on.

Tax Deductibility

If you are moving more than 40km to start a new job or attend school, some of your moving expenses may be tax deductible against the income earned in the new location. You can obtain a T1M form from Canada Customs and Revenue or download it from here.

Long Distance MovingDelivery Schedules

During your pre-move consultation, your moving consultant will discuss scheduling with you. Your shipment will be loaded on the day requested and a delivery spread will be established based on the weight of your shipment and the distance it is traveling. Inherent in this schedule is the ability for the van operator to travel the distance and still abide by government hours of service regulations. Reasonable compensation for lodging and meals will be provided through Atlas Van Lines if we fail to deliver by the “last day” of your delivery spread.

Destination Services

An important component of moving with Highland is our ability to provide destination services through our 550 Atlas agent network throughout North America. Our Atlas agent at destination will arrange to unpack any agent packed cartons and remove the debris from your home. Atlas can arrange for a visit from a local Welcome Wagon hostess to help you get oriented to your new community. In the unlikely event that you sustain any loss or damage, Atlas will assign and oversee an experienced claims adjuster to arrange for repairs or compensation.
